Fernando Alonso will start from 7th position in the sprint race of the Brazilian GP this Saturday (8:30 pm Spanish mainland / DAZN F1) after a classification in which he was always in the top position in difficult conditions.
The Spaniard signed a perfect ‘fit’ in the early stages. It started for the intermediate tires after some rain, but the track dried out and the times improved with each lap. Whenever he had to set a time, he did so by putting himself in the top positions, both with intermediates, and when he had to wear soft tires despite being one of the few drivers who had never tested that compound in FP1. The Spaniard came to put himself first in a few moments up to three occasions. But in the end, the heavy rain that will fall in Q3 will benefit whoever is first on the track. Oviedo was harmed by the distant position of his box with respect to the pit lane traffic light, or perhaps his team did not take him out before the tail of the pit lane. He cannot take advantage of the crazy qualification to get a better position.
The Asturian had to settle for 7th last place. The man from Oviedo wants to score points in the sprint race by finishing in the top 8 and will be looking to improve his position for the start this Sunday.
“I am contented. At the beginning, with the intermediates, we adapted quickly and were in the first position nicely. On dry tires we were back in first position all the time and we seemed to be fast”, he noted in a statement from Alpine.
“In Q3, when the rain starts, it always benefits those at the front of the queue. Probably we missed the chance to start higher for the sprint race, but this Saturday the goal is to make up some places and I’m sure it’s possible”finished
