An Everton on a spin is one point from relegation

Date:

Bournemouth are taking oxygen at the expense of an Everton who are still in a tailspin and go into the World Cup break one step away from the Premier League relegation zone. The ‘cherries’ eliminated Frank Lampard’s team from the 1/16 final of the League Cup on Tuesday with a resounding 4-1 and today, again at the Vitality Stadium, they again thrashed him 3-0 allowing him to abandon 17th place and leave the ‘toffees’ here.

It’s a bottom-of-the-table clash where a crucial victory is at stake going into the break, putting ground in the middle with the relegation places. Everton started well, dominating the ball and enjoying chances to get on the scoreboard, but Bournemouth went 2-0 ahead before half-time by converting their first two goals.

The team of Gary O’Neil, interim coach after the dismissal of Scott Parker in August, took advantage of the lack of force of the visiting defense in both actions. In the 17th minute, Dominic Solanke picked up the ball and fired a shot from the edge of the box. Jordan Pickford mishandled a seemingly easy ball allowing Marcus Tavernier to score into an empty net (1-0).

Another defensive mistake, another goal

Seven minutes later, Everton’s defense was not strong again. First, winger Nathan Patterson allowed Philip Billing to win the ball on the end line which looked lost and attempted an impossible goal with a whiplash off angle which Pickford parried as best he could. The rebound fell to Tavernier, who assisted a header so that Kieffer Moore, who went all in and collided with Vitaly Mykolenko, put his head on goal to make it 2-0.

Already in the second half, Bournemouth condemned another Everton defensive error. Lewis Cook kicks a free-kick from the left and Jaidon Anthony, who has just entered the field, gets free from the mark (68′).

Oxygen for Bournemouth, pressure for Everton

The ‘cherries’ ended a run of four consecutive league defeats and climbed to 13th place, 3 points from relegation, while Everton have won just one in the last seven days, dropping them a place and remaining in -17, just one point away from Nottingham, third from last.
