Jon Rahm criticizes world ranking system: “Ridiculous”

Date:

Dubai pulls the curtain this week on the 2022 European circuit with a dispute of DP World Tour Championshipwhich mentions the 50 best golfers of the season, including the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and the Spanish Jon Rahmworld number 1 and 5.

In his press conference, Rahm harshly criticized the world ranking system for the low score expected for the final tournament of the European circuit compared to RSM Classic of the American tour, almost halfway through his remaining participation.

“I will be as direct as possible. I think the world ranking right now is ridiculous. That RSM does not have any of the 25 best players in the world and it has more points than this tournament where we have seven from the top -25 is ridiculous,” said Rahm.

The RSM Classic winner will receive 38.38 points and the Dubai winner will receive 21.82. “I understand that there are more participants and competition, but having the best players in the world automatically makes the tournament better. I don’t care what their system says. I think they made a mistake. I think some aspect of it can be beneficial. , but I think they devalue the best players,” Jon said.

“Let’s get the Tour Championship As an example: the 30 best players of the year should not be penalized because of lower participation. The fact that there are more or fewer players does not mean that a tournament is better. I could go on and on. I think they’re a little lost in this aspect,” Rahm concluded.

The Spaniard’s opinion, however, differs from that expressed the day before by McIlroy, who sees it as fair that if there is more competition there will be more points for the champion. Rahm wants quality to be valued more. McIlroy understands that numbers prevail.

“In Dubai we are 50 players and on Georgia 144 plays. They have 90 more players who will contribute to the strength of their participation. The reason why Dubai gives 21 points and RSM has 39 is that the RSM champion has to beat 143 other players and here only 49. It’s a fairer system,” explained the Northern Irishman.

Controversies aside, McIlroy, who has already won this year at FedEx Cup on the American tour, he is seeking to become just the second golfer to finish the season ranked No. 1 in both tours. If he succeeds, he will emulate the Swedish Henrik Stenson (2013). Rory, winner of four titles in grand slambecame No. 1 three times in Europe (2012, 2014, 2015) and in USA (2016, 2019, 2022).

Rory arrived in Dubai leading the standings with 4,154 points. the new zealand ryan fox, the world number 24, is second and his main threat with 4,026 points. Five other players still have mathematical options to finish as No. 1: Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Victor Hovland, Shane Lowry Y Adrian Merok.

Rahm, now 14th in Europe, has won the final tournament in Dubai twice (2017, 2019) and is clearly one of the big attractions in the field again. Jumeirah. Adrian Otaegui (12th), Pablo Larrazabal (18th), adri arnaus (29th), Rafael Cabrera (42nd) and Jorge Campillo (48th) are the other Spaniards in the top-50 who got their ticket to Dubai.
