The CEO of A-League, Danny Townsendmake an offer to attract Cristiano Ronaldo in the Australian top flight, although he admits he may not be able to compete financially with rival bids for the star of Manchester Utd.
Ronaldo’s future at United is up in the air after he said he felt “betrayed” by the Premier League club and disrespected by his manager Erik ten Hag in an interview with Piers Morgan.
Townsend revealed to Australian media on Thursday that he had made an offer to former Real Madrid agent Jorge Mendes, should Ronaldo leave United.
“(Ronaldo) said he doesn’t get love and respect at Manchester United, but we will certainly give him a lot of love and respect in Australia,” Townsend said in comments published by News Corp. “We may not compete financially with other offers, but we can compete in other ways,” he added.
Ronaldo, the leading scorer in the history of international men’s soccer with 117 goals in 191 official matches, is preparing to lead Portugal to Qatar in their fifth World Cup. “Obviously it’s a long shot, but we certainly have a compelling proposition for him to consider coming here to Australia,” Townsend told local SportsFM radio on Thursday.
