Qatar has said enough. Only 48 hours before the start of the World Cup, Hassan Al Thawadi, the general secretary of Qatar 2022, issued a harsh statement in which he was charged against the critics of the Arab country.
“This World Cup is probably the most written and commented on, before the ball has even been thrown. Sadly, much of this commentary has veered towards accepting misinformation, denying nuance and depth, and often relying on racists tropes based on long-held stereotypes and prejudices about the Middle East and the Arab world,” he said.
“This does not mean that we reject constructive criticism. We communicate directly and consider every word. We ensure that this contest is a beacon of progress, contributing to internationally recognized labor reform in our country. Our vision for this contest is that it should serve as a platform to build a bridge between East and West, recognizing our differences and celebrating our common humanity through the passion that ultimately unites us: football,” explained Al Thawadi.
“In the current global climate, we must cherish these rare opportunities to come together. The beauty of the World Cup is that it attracts people from all corners of the world, from all walks of life and walks of life, and leaves a legacy of friendship and understanding that removes misunderstandings, prejudices and stereotypes,” he assessed.
“Despite those who believe that Qatar and the Arab world are not worthy or not worthy to host, the facts indicate that the people do not agree: 97% of the tickets are sold. The UK is in the top five markets for those sales. We are excited to welcome people and share the culture of hospitality we value as Qataris and Arabs. We are proud of who we are and the values we stand for . We are a country that always defends openness, dialogue between people and the union of people. These values are the essence of the World Cup”, concluded the general secretary of Qatar 2022.
