The Serbian beats Casper Ruud in a very even final and equals Roger Federer in ATP Finals titles
Novak Djokovic is the master of tennis in 2022. The Belgrade player defeated Norwegian Ruud 7-5 6-3 to claim his sixth ATP Finals title after seven years without the trophy, matching Federer . The Serbian in turn becomes the oldest player to win the tournament at 35 years old.
A very even game from the start, with both players pushing their serve forward with solvency. At 6-5, a hesitant service game from Ruud gave Djokovic the chance to break his rival’s serve to take the first set.
Already with the first set in his pocket, the Serb let go of his right foot and the Norwegian started to run and suffer too much. Djokovic capitalized on that excellent playing moment in the match to break the Norwegian’s serve and lead the match to a quick victory by taking the second set 6-3. As data, this was the fourth meeting between the two tennis players, matches in which the Norwegian has not been able to take a single set from the Serb.
With this victory, Djokovic rises to fifth in the ATP ranking and if he wins the next Australian Open in 2023, he would once again become the world number 1. Casper Ruud, for his part, will finish his best season on a personal level in third, just 200 points behind Rafa Nadal, but with the pain of not winning any of the three Grand Finals he has played.
