Date:

the rangers confirmed in a statement that they had fired Giovanni van Bronckhorst just a week after his first anniversary as Ibrox boss. President Douglas Park admitted that “the results did not meet our expectations or Gio’s”.

The Light Blues trail Celtic by nine points in the title race for Scottish Premiership.

The 47-year-old Dutchman appeared set to remain in office at least until domestic action resumes on December 15 after the Qatar 2022 World Cup break, but the Light Blues hierarchy have decided to act. Van Bronckhorst replaces Steven Gerrard after his departure from Aston Villa midway through last season and managed 65 games.

The club announced in a statement: “Rangers Football Club today confirms that it has parted ways with manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The board wishes to record its sincere thanks to Gio for all his efforts from when he was appointed as manager. Arriving at the club just over a year ago, Gio led the club to their fifth European final and won the Scottish Cup in May. He also led the team to the club’s first Champions League qualification in 12 years.
