Olivier Giroud equaled the record of Thierry Henry, the French team’s all-time top scorer, in the best scenario. At 36 years old, the Milan striker scored his 50th and 51st goals in the ‘bleu’ shirt against Australia in the world champions’ premiere in Qatar 2022.
Giroud scored a short-lived 1-1 in the 26th minute by heading a pass from Adrien Rabiot into an empty net. And, on 71′, he closed the scoring by heading in a perfect cross from Kylian Mbappé from the left wing.
With 115 caps behind him after his debut in November 2011 in a friendly against the United States, Giroud scored his second and third goals in the final stages of a World Cup after his feat against Switzerland in 2014. Despite of the start, he was central to capturing the title at Russia 2018, although he did not see the door.
Beat a Zidane record
Giroud became the oldest French goalscorer at a World Cup today, ahead of Zinedine Zidane, who at the age of 34 scored a ‘Panenka-style’ penalty in the 2006 final defeat against Italy.
