The sports director of the federation will resign in January, at the end of his contract, and Albert Luque will henceforth occupy the sports management of the absolute national team
Luis Enrique is not the only victim of the earthquake within the Spanish national team after the unexpected elimination against Morocco in the eighth finals of the World Cup. A few hours after announcing the retirement of the coach, who was replaced in office by the hitherto U-21 coach, Luis de la Fuente, the Spanish Football Federation (FEF) announced that the federation’s sports director, José Francisco Molina, nor will he remain in office from January next year when his contract expires.
The appointment of Albert Luque as sports director was also made official, albeit only of the senior team, another position that will be compatible with that of the former international goalkeeper for the time being until the end of the year. The federation plans to give way to a “new sports project”, facing “a restructuring with a new management model in the sports field”.
Molina joined the sports management of the FEF in 2018, after the World Cup fiasco in Russia. He has since been in charge of Luis Enrique’s hand as coach, alongside Robert Moreno as the Spaniard left the bench due to personal issues. With the national team, he experienced the sweet side of football with the semi-finals of the multi-venue Eurocup in the summer of 2021, as well as the last four of the 2020-21 League of Nations. However, Qatar’s failure has ended his training period in the Federation, as has happened to Luis Enrique.
