Emmanuel Macron, president of the French Republic, attended the victory of Didier Deschamps’ team against Morocco (2-0) at the Al Bayt stadium in Doha and after the game he went down to the locker room to congratulate the ‘bleus’, currently champions, for qualifying for the second time in a row for the final of a World Cup.
“Sport gives simple and pure emotion. I was tense because a game is never won,” Macron acknowledged. “The Moroccans played very well. I thank Didier Deschamps and this team, a mix of different generations.”-
Macron will also attend the final
Macron did not praise the French team: “This team made me feel very proud. I saw another extraordinary game. Griezmann was incredibly generous.” The French president addressed his country’s fans to ask them “that everyone enjoy the moment and on Sunday we won. I will be there on Sunday.”
When asked about the controversial organization of the World Cup in Qatar, Macron declared that “sport must unite. Sometimes countries that do not talk to each other politically, talk to each other. It must be recognized that Qatar is specifically organizing this competition.”
Finally, in relation to FIFA’s ban on teams wearing rainbow bracelets during matches, Macron said “there are many countries where action must also be taken. Tonight we must take advantage of this qualification for the final”.
