Nearly two million citizens from around the world have shown their solidarity with the Iranian people through the movement ‘change.org/m/women-life-freedom’
More than 343,000 people have so far signed on Change.org to stop the execution of Iranian soccer player Amir Nasr-Azadani, who has been sentenced to death for supporting human rights and the defense of women’s rights in his country. Nearly half a million people have mobilized in recent hours to ask FIFA and the Iranian authorities to stop the punishment of the 26-year-old player who has been called up for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Nearly two million citizens from around the world have shown their solidarity with the Iranian people through the movement ‘change.org/m/women-life-freedom’, following the reprisals by the government of this country against human rights defenders.
Amir Nasr-Azadani has been sentenced to death for supporting women’s rights protests in his country, as confirmed by the International Federation of Professional Footballers’ Associations (FIFPro), which has also called on the Iranian authorities to take away the grief. “We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for the immediate lifting of his sentence,” the global union said.
Nasr-Azadani was charged by the Iranian regime with a crime called “moharebeh”, i.e. “enmity with God”, which leads to execution by hanging, a punishment that young Mohsen Shekari and wrestler Majid Reza Rahnavard have already suffered, hanged in public in the holy city of Mashad at the same cost as the footballer.
“Treason to the Fatherland”
“Iranian footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani could be executed,” warns Argentine citizen Natalia Marcellino in her petition change.org/FrenemosLaEjecucion. In just three days, his call to “stop the execution of Amir Nars-Azadani” has garnered nearly 300,000 signatures. According to ‘Iranwire’, Amir Nasr-Azadani was sentenced to death for ‘treason against the fatherland, after declaring his support for human rights and the defense of women’s rights in his country’, as emphasized in his campaign text .
Spain’s Sylvia Pozo has also asked FIFA to “speak out and ask for clemency for World Cup player Amir Nars-Azadani and, if necessary, to suspend the World Cup”. His petition change.org/SalvarAAmir has received more than 184,000 signatures in two days and continues to gain support in recent hours. These requests aren’t the only ones that have gone viral on the platform in recent weeks.
Change.org, whose goal is to get 500,000 signatures so that Nasr-Azadani is not executed, is the world’s largest petition platform. With over 490 million users around the world, it empowers millions of people to create the changes they want to see.
