Manchester United, Barça’s rivals next February in the Europa League playoffs, continue the competition on the right foot after the World Cup in Qatar. Burnley, leaders of English football’s second tier after being relegated from the Premier League last season, arrived at Old Trafford ready to surprise Vicent Kompany, former defender of arch-rivals City, on the bench but logic prevailed and the ‘red devils’ advanced to the quarterfinals of the League Cup (2-0).
It was United’s first game without Cristiano Ronaldo, who had his contract terminated during the World Cup after his incendiary statements against the club. In addition, Erik ten Hag cannot get Lisandro Martínez, Raphaël Varane, who participated in the Qatar 2022 final on Sunday, or Harry Maguire due to illness. Casemiro delayed his position to play centrally.
dubravka, owner
Most of the internationals, like Casemiro, rejoined United this week, and they now have one available at Ten Hag. Under the sticks he kept Martin Dubravka, starter in the League Cup, instead of David De Gea.
Although Burnley started to dominate in the early stages, United heated up the match under the excellent Bruno Fernandes, who served youngster Alejandro Garnacho a goal on a tray, but he was unable to determine in a one-on-one with Bailey Peacock -Farrell (7′).
Second chance, Eriksen’s goal
The second clear-cut chance was slow to arrive, but United were unforgiving of more. Bruno Fernandes turned the game around with a great pass to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who assisted the flight for Christian Eriksen to shoot across the goal to make it 1-0 (27′).
United opened the can but could not escape the misery against the Championship leaders. Burnley reacted through the excellent right winger Manuel Benson, who created two successive chances but first his shot fell into the side of the net and the second, a fine left-footer into the corner, was- Dubravka cleared.
dubravka, fallon
The nervous Slovakian goalkeeper also insisted on adding emotion to the game with a double error which Casemiro corrected on the goal line and seconds later Dubravka himself after failing to control a loan from the Brazilian.
Just before the break, however, United got the wind and Anthony Martial forced Peacock-Farrell into a superb save.
Rashford’s remarks on his great goal
On the restart the tide was back on their course, United regained the pulse of the game and extended their lead with a fine goal from Marcus Rashford after a spectacular gallop. The English striker celebrated his renewal until 2024 (the club exercised his option on Tuesday) starting in midfield, he came from a defender and finished with a cross shot that went past the post (57′).
Everything seems to have been resolved but the fans at Old Trafford have become used to misery recently and this time was no exception. Burnley had three clear chances to complicate United’s classification but they failed to shoot.
Burnley caressing the goal
Recent arrival Darko Churlinov crossed too far before Dubravka left after a good ball into space by Johann Gudmundsson (68′). It also had Ashley Barnes only receiving in the area but shooting high (70′). And Barnes himself, after a mistake in the delivery to Casemiro, did not find a goal in too little (81′).
In the end, United did not burn and completed their classification, moreover deservedly for their dominance and supremacy for the majority of the game. On Tuesday he faces his return to the Premier, where the table is in fifth place, hosting Nottingham.
