LaLiga’s audiovisual revenues are declining while eight Primera clubs are growing

Date:

Real Madrid and Barça lower their cache but receive 160 million in last season’s distribution, surpassed only by six Premier clubs

With complaints from Real Madrid and Barcelona mounting over the organizations’ rejection of the European Super League, LaLiga has made public the division of each First and Second club for the centralized sale of audiovisual rights during the 2021-22 season. In total, turnover is down some 15 million from last year and although the revenues of both the white club and the azulgrana have fallen, both remain prominently at the head of the wealthiest.

As usual, Real Madrid is the team that has won the largest share of the pie (€160.85 million), surpassing Barcelona by €720,000. Atlético is the third highest earner on television with 30 million less than the two ocean liners. In Segunda, where 198.95 million have been distributed, Eibar (28) earns the most thanks to help from relegation.

Bittersweet interpretation for meringues and culés, since the former earned 2.5 million less on TV and the Catalans saw their income fall by 5.47, always in millions of euros. A drop that, according to the organization led by Javier Tebas, is more related to sporting merits, since the distribution takes into account the standings of recent years, and in the case of Barcelona, it came second twice and third again , and due to the impact of Covid.

Still, both Real Madrid and Barcelona compete with the rest of the major European clubs in terms of television revenue. Tebas has long maintained that no Serie A, Ligue 1 or Bundesliga team comes close. Only six Premier clubs would be ahead, Manchester City being the one with the most advantage with 15 million more.

Although the Spanish competition is still far from what the Premier (2,537 million euros) generates for this concept, since the introduction of the centralized sale of audiovisual rights in 2015, LaLiga has achieved a remarkable growth (15.15%), much higher than that of the English competition (5.77%) in the same period.

From one year to the next, up to eight first-class clubs have improved, albeit slightly. Atlético, the third highest earner on television, earned about 200,000 euros more. The rest of the teams increasing their revenues are Sevilla, Betis, Osasuna, Cádiz, Mallorca, Espanyol and Rayo. These last three because they were active in the 20-21 in Second where the collection on TV is much lower.

In this cast of television there is a novelty. This is the first time that the so-called Impulse Plan has been registered with the CVC fund. The 38 signing clubs, all excluding Real Madrid, Barça, Athletic and Ibiza, relinquished around 8% of their television rights over the next 50 years in exchange for 2,000 million to be distributed.

At present, the impact of CVC is barely perceivable for three reasons. The first is that the 8% transfer will not happen all at once, but gradually over the next four seasons. The second is that the granting of those rights does not correspond to the entire 21-22 campaign, but only counts from January, when the agreement was signed. And finally, part of the 8% payable to CVC will come from the loan account and not from the audiovisual rights account.

In LaLiga SmartBank, 198.95 million euros has been distributed, with Eibar being the clear winner with 28.58, clearly in favor of the relegation support (19.69 million). The ranking is followed by the other two teams that fell out of the First Division in 20-21 and also receive a subsidy: Valladolid (23.63 million) and Huesca (16.52). Among those earning the least are the four teams that have risen from the First RFEF, former Second B: Amorebieta (5.57 million), Ibiza (5.75), Real Sociedad B (5.77) and Burgos ( 5.87).
