Like Jacky Ickx, in Dakar in the same Toyota to accompany his daughter

Lorenzo Fluxà belongs to one of the largest families in Majorcafamous for its success and dedication in the shoe industry for its factories of Camper and Lottusse, but also in other sectors such as the hotel industry with the Iberostar Group. But if there is something that defines Lorenzo it is his passion for motorcycles, something that ended up being reflected in his 4 children. Three of them are motorsport commitments: Lorenzo Fluxà jr. from 17 yearswill take part in this course at European Regional Formula after signing for Prema. Lukefrom 13 yearswill run in 2023 on Karting World Cup OK after marveling at OK Jr.. Y Moon Fluxà12 years old, is the first woman to sign for the team’s young talent academy f1 mercedes, winner of the 2021 European Championship and 17th in his first year at the Junior World Championship in 2022. They all dream of F1 and Lorenzo, as a father, is with them wherever they go. Besides all the business trips, he spends “an average of 32 weekends a year” on circuits. That made him worry. I have to spend more time with only one of the 4 who doesn’t want to drive: Elizabeth, 16 years old.

He feels “indebted” as a father. Until one day, one proposal changed everything: “When he told me he wanted to be my co-driver in regular rallies, he gave me a huge illusion”. This is how Lorenzo Fluxà began one of the projects of his life. When he turned 50, he decided to consider himself fulfilling his desire to attend the Dakar. But it does so with a greater challenge: He debuted in Dakar 2023 to prepare to go to Dakar 2025 with his daughter as co-driver.

Before, she had to do two things: prepare the car and find a co-driver (her son still couldn’t join due to age). He searched the boating market and found one of the best in Europe in Regularity, Sergi Giraltwho in 2021 made his Dakar Classic debut as a navigator, winning almost half of the stages. He traveled to Barcelona and convinced her immediately: “Go to pick me up. It’s an honor. When Lorenzo called me and went, I immediately said yes and more than a car like Jacky Ickx’s Toyota,” he told this newspaper.

As for the car, things are more difficult. Most of the pieces are original, but apart from leaving everything impeccable, Fluxà and Giralt they need to have spare parts to tackle a race like the Dakar Classic. To do this, they were able to contact Toyota employees at the time, who helped them prepare these parts one by one, having to make molds for most of them.

Lisabel will follow the Dakar from home, glued to the time table, knowing that in two years she will be the star. Sergi, Fluxà’s current co-driver, will be an important part in his training, as well as the experience he has gained in the regularity races they have conducted in recent years.

The matter does not end there. 2025 will mark the 25th anniversary of the participation of Jacky Ickx with his daughter Vanilla. Lorenzo Fluxà wants to emulate the legendary former F1 driver with the same challenge, and to do so, he will do it with the exact same unit that the Belgian drives in the deserts of Africa. Jacky signed up in 1997 with Vanina, but a last minute problem forced them to quit. Finally, they competed in 2000 in a Toyota, finishing 18th overall. The Toyota is now in the hands of Fluxà, who will debut in the 2023 Dakar with said vehicle.

Camper family ‘return’ to Dakar

Apart from the romanticism of wanting to compete with his daughter and pay tribute to Jacky Ickx, who has been replicating his challenge since the 2000s, this story has another notable point. With Fluxà, a member of the Camper family returns to the Dakar, a firm that was one of the most iconic and memorable Spanish sponsors of the Dakar in the 80s and 90s, such as its sponsorship of Carlos Mas on a motorcycle and the famous it’s red. decoration

“In races, time with a child is quality”

“The time spent racing with a child is quality. There is nothing better than sharing a hobby, but also the difficult moments experienced in trials, where they need the support of a father. The races are united a great deal father and a son”directed MD Lorenzo, who after the Dakar already had a clear plan: run with Lisabel in the Classics Rally of Mallorca and, immediately after, the Costa Brava with Pep Bassas’ legendary M2.

We will be running on the Costa Brava with Pep Bassas’ M3. I have already done a rally in Mallorca with my daughter, we will do it regularly, before Cista Brava we will have the Mallorca Classic Rally. So, he will also be able to pay tribute to Bassas in the best way, a friend with whom he made his debut in a great race in 2002, sharing the experience of a Seat León in the 24 Hours of Montmeló.
