Martina Navratilova announces that she has breast and throat cancer

Date:

The former number one and tennis legend is once again battling an illness she overcame 13 years ago

Martina Navratilova again suffers from breast and throat cancer, the newspaper ‘The Times’ reported on Monday and the tennis star herself confirmed in a statement. It should be remembered that the 66-year-old nationalized American player of Czech origin already overcame a breast tumor 13 years ago.

“I’m going to fight this with all my might,” Navratilova said herself. One of the tennis player’s spokespersons also assures that the disease has been diagnosed at the beginning and that is why they are optimistic. “The prognosis is good and Martina will start her treatment this month. This type of cancer responds well to treatment,” his representative reported. “While Martina was undergoing throat tests, a suspicious lump was found in her breast, which was later diagnosed as cancer,” the statement said.

Tennis legend Navratilova is an ambassador for the women’s circuit and was planning to travel to the Australian Open as a commentator on the Tennis Channel, though she hopes to do so remotely. The winner of 59 Grand Slams between singles and doubles has the second battle of her life ahead of her. She retired in 2006 at the age of 50 and is the tennis player with the most weeks as world number one (332), reaching the top of the WTA rankings to 156 consecutively.
