American Gervonta Davis retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight title, defeating Dominican Héctor Luis García by withdrawing before the ninth round, this Saturday in Washington.
The fight was even for the first five rounds, but then turned in favor of Davis, who landed powerful left hooks, his weapon of the night.
World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight champion Garcia, who moved up in weight for the occasion, showed early that he has a strong chin, and was able to counterpunch and add some excitement to the fight.
But it didn’t last. After a few minutes of delay due to a fight in the VIP circle at the foot of the ring, in the eighth round Davis picked up the pace.
“Tank” unleashed two big punches from his left leg, shaking Garcia so much that despite being saved by the bell he was unable to continue the fight, causing the referee to stop proceedings.
Sitting in his corner, the 31-year-old Dominican boxer, suffering his first loss in 17 fights (16 wins, 10 of them before the limit), said: “I don’t see! I don’t see!
“I know I hurt him a lot,” Gervonta Davis reacted on the microphone after his 28th victory in as many fights (26 of them before the limit).
Now everyone is waiting for the super duel between Gervonta Davis and Ryan “King” Garcia, former interim WBC lightweight champion and undefeated in 23 fights which could be in Las Vegas in April.
