The final round of the qualifying phase of the Australian Open will have only two Spanish representatives. It was Cristina Bucsa, who overcame American Ashlyn Krueger 6-2, 6-0 and will play the pass this Thursday with Japan’s Nao Hibino and Jéssica Bouzas, who also had no problem eliminating Australian Ellen Pérez (6-3, 6-2) and will face the new child prodigy of world tennis, the Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova.
The other three Spaniards had worse luck in contention. Rebecca Masarovawho reached the final of the Auckland tournament last week, was unable to maintain his streak and lost in the second round of qualifying to Italian Lucrezia Stefanini despite winning the first set 6-1. In the next two they surrendered the double 6-3.
They also lost Marina Bassols against French Kristina Mladenovic, by 6-2, 6-7(8) and 7-5, and Aliona Bolsova against Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 6-1 and 6-2.
In the men’s category the last two survivors fell. Charles Taberner lost to American Denis Kudla (7-5, 6-3), while Fernando Verdasco he lost to Juncheng Shang of China, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
