Newcastle, third and qualified this week for the semifinals of the English League Cup, are having an outstanding season, but now an extra-sports episode has caused uncertainty within the club.
As reported by Northumbria County Police, Brazilian striker Joelinton, 26, was arrested at 1.20 am this Thursday when he was driving his car on Ponteland Road, in the Newcastle area. After testing positive for the breathalyzer, he was released pending his court appearance on 26 January.
Joelinton is one of the main parts of Eddie Howe, Newcastle coach, and this season he has played 21 games in all competitions with three goals, two of them in the Premier, to his credit. The third was certainly achieved on Tuesday and sealed the classification against Leicester in the quarterfinals of the League Cup (2-0). He has also provided three assists this season.
Newcastle have been informed of the incident but are yet to comment.
