Alexandr Petrakov today left the position of coach of his country, Ukraine, which was left at the gate of the World Cup in Qatar, the Ukrainian Football Association (AUF) reported on Thursday.
Petrakov, who took office in August 2021 to replace Andriy Shevchenko, left him at the end of his contract, which expired on December 31.
Ukraine, the scene of a military clash with neighboring Russia since February 2022, failed to qualify for the World Cup after beating Scotland (3-1) in the play-off, but lost in the final to Wales (1-0 ).

Petrakov, who became the U20 world champion with Ukraine in 2019 by defeating South Korea in the final at a tournament played in Poland, is grateful to AUF for the opportunity to lead the senior team.
“We are trying to achieve the greatest and give Ukraine the happiness of victory in the most difficult period in the country’s recent history,” said Petrakov.
Before leaving the bench for the national team, Shevchenko led the team to the quarterfinals of the last European Championship, where they fell to England (4-0).
