The International Board has given the green light to a novelty that can also be put into practice at the Women’s Football World Cup next summer
The referees will explain via the public address system in the stadiums where the next Club World Cup will be played, in Morocco, and also in front of the televisions broadcasting the matches, what decisions they will make with the VAR. The novelty will be tested in the competition that will be played between February 1 and 11 of the same month, in which Real Madrid will participate as European champions.
The Club World Cup will again serve as a test for an unprecedented decision in football, so that it can later be put into practice, certainly gradually, in all competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA. The next tournament in which it could be implemented is in the Women’s World Cup next summer, according to As newspaper.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which regulates the rules of the game, has given the green light to this novelty, which will bring football refereeing closer to that of other leagues, such as the NFL of American football and rugby. The reasons for their decisions will be announced by the referees about the VAR to the fans present in the stadium and, thanks to the microphones that the referees will carry, the sound will also be broadcast on television.
“At the meeting it was agreed that the decisions related to the video assistant referee (VAR) will be communicated live by the referees to the public, both in the stadium and via televisions, which will be tested in international competitions for 12 months, and which will initially be filmed at the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, which begins on February 1,” the IFAB announced in a statement.
The IFAB in London also discussed discounts on matches and the possible introduction of the stopped clock. The organization insisted on following the protocol already used at the World Cup in Qatar, where the discounts of the matches were much longer.
