Guendouzi put Marseille in the round of 16

Date:

With a goal from Matteo Guendouzi, Olympique Marseille beat Rennes 1-0 on Friday and qualified for the round of 16 of the French Cup. A victory that confirms his good form as he has eight consecutive years in official competition

The team led by Igor Tudor has not lost since November 1, 2022, when they succumbed to a defeat in the Champions League against Tottenham (1-2). Since then they have beaten Olympique Lyon (1-0), Monaco (2-3), Toulouse (6-1), Montpellier (1-2), Troyes (0-2) and Lorient (3-1) in Ligue 1 ) and Hyères (0-2) and now Rennes in the French Cup.

His eighth victim was a team fighting in the upper zone of the French League. Rennes, fifth in the standings, was not an easy opponent for Marseille, who, however, had a very complete game that they almost dominated from start to finish with very few surprises.

Indeed, only Lorenz Assignon, ten minutes from time, had a chance for Rennes, who came close to leveling the game on an isolated occasion. Until then it was completely missing from the attack.

Two shots on the sticks

Previously, Olympique Marseille had many opportunities to open the scoring. First with an attempt by the Chilean Alexis Sánchez, who missed a very clear chance after two minutes; then there was a free-kick on the post by Ruslan Malinovsky; and, finally, with another shot on the wood by Nuno Tavares.

All those chances, before the break, were the prelude to the goal of Guendouzi, who, finally, in the first stages of the restart, hit the target with a shot from inside the area after an assist from to Jordan Veretout. His goal sealed a deserved classification and proved the good moment of a difficult team in the last two and a half months.
