After three consecutive games without a win, PSV Eindhoven, Sevilla’s next Europa League rivals, beat Vitesse 1-0 to move two points behind Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord.
The team led by Ruud van Nistelrooy recovered from three consecutive holes – they lost against AZ Alkmaar (0-1) and drew with Sparta Rotterndam (0-0) and Fortuna Sittard (2-2) – to put pressure on Feyenoord, who host Ajax this Sunday, another direct rival for the title of PSV Eindhoven.
Against Vitesse, the man in charge of giving Sevilla’s rivals a breather was Guus Til, who in the first minutes of the restart knocked down the wall erected by goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, who would head home in extra time.
Lluuk de Jong missed a penalty
Until the 48th minute, nobody got past the Vitesse goalkeeper. Not even from the penalty spot as Luuk de Jong (ex Sevilla and Barça) found himself with the figure of Scherpen in a shot from eleven meters in the opening act.
El Vitesse, coached by Phillip Cocu, could not react to Til’s goal. Throughout the second half they tried to score to score at least one point to get out of the relegation zone. He was unsuccessful and PSV, after an erratic start to the year, regained the pulse in the Eredivisie.
