The French winger suffers an injury to the left semimembranosus muscle

Serious setback for Real Madrid. The Chamartín club announced this Tuesday that Ferland Mendy has suffered an injury to the left semimembranosus muscle, which will see the Frenchman out for about two months.

The French winger was injured last Thursday during the Copa del Rey quarter-final between Real Madrid and Atlético at the Santiago Bernabéu. The former Olympique de Lyon player felt a puncture which forced him to retire in the 44th minute of that game, resulting in the Whites qualifying for the semi-finals after a 3–1 win after extra time. The Frenchman was out against Real Sociedad on Sunday and this Monday he underwent medical tests that confirmed that he has a serious injury.

This is a significant drop for Real Madrid as they are the only pure left-back Carlo Ancelotti has on their roster. The Italian could not count on David Alaba in recent games, who he prefers as a central defender, but who gained fame as a left back in his time at Bayern Munich. Therefore, in the second part of the match against Atlético and in the match against Real Sociedad, the coach resorted to the figure of Eduardo Camavinga to make up for Mendy’s absence, since Nacho, whose versatility allows him to play in any position to perform from behind, he covered the loss of Dani Carvajal on the right.

Real Madrid’s extremely tight schedule in the coming weeks weighs more heavily on Mendy’s injury who, when the estimated period of absence is over, would miss the league matches against Valencia, Mallorca, Elche, Osasuna, Atlético, Betis, Espanyol and Barcelona . He would not reach the Classics with Barça in the Copa del Rey semi-finals and will not be available for the Club World Cup or the Champions League round of 16 against Liverpool.
