The International Olympic Committee (IOC) opened two weeks ago the possibility that Russian and Belarusian athletes can participate in international competitions under a neutral flag and as long as they do not “actively” support the invasion of Russia in Ukraine.
“The time is not yet ripe for these considerations.because nothing has changed about Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine”, said the Nordic committees in a joint letter, which also includes the sports confederations of the five countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland), which sent today to various international organizations. , including the IOC.
The signatories assured that they will engage in “close dialogue” with “relevant” interested parties to assess the situation and reaffirmed their support for the Ukrainian people and called for “peace”.
The Danish government had already positioned itself last week against Russian and Belarusian athletes who could compete in Paris under a neutral flag.
Other European countries such as Poland and the Baltic states are also opposed to the participation of Russia and Belarusian, while the Ukrainian Olympic Committee has threatened to boycott the Games.
