Former Croatian soccer coach Miroslav ‘Chiro’ Blazevicwho led the team to third place at the 1998 World Cup in France, died this Wednesday in Zagreb at the age of 87, after suffering a long illness.
‘Chiro’ was very popular for his sporting achievements, but also for his sense of humor and sociability, so the public and the media nicknamed him ‘The coach of all coaches’ or ‘Legendary Chiro’.
Born in 1935 in Travnik, Bosnia-Herzegovina, where he started playing in a local team, he was part of several Balkan clubs, including Dinamo Zagreb.
He began his coaching career at the age of 31, in 1963, to manage a total of 19 clubs in Switzerland, Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, China and Iran, as well as the national teams of Switzerland, Croatia , Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Chinese under 23 years of age.
His greatest achievements were when his Dinamo Zagreb won the Yugoslav championship in 1982, and when the Croatian team finished third in the 1998 World Cup in France.
