Croatia, South Korea, Netherlands, Finland, Chile and Czech Republic vacancies for Davis Cup Finals after resolving their respective rivalries in the qualifying rounds played this weekend.
These six teams joined the Switzerland, France, Serbia, Sweden, Great Britain and the United Stateswho achieved their goal on Saturday.
The twelve winners of the qualifying duels joined the finalists of the last edition, Canadachampion, and Australiafinalist, and two teams that earned invitations: Spain and Italy.
Thus, sixteen national teams make up the poster for the 2023 edition of the Davis Cup, which will play a group stage in September, in places yet to be confirmed, and a final round in November, among the eight survivors, in Málaga.
Chile returned to the finals of the Davis Cup after four years after defeating Kazakhstan in La Serena (3-1). Cristian Garin’s victory over Alexander Bublik gave the South Americans the final point. On the first day, Garin fell to Timofei Skatov (6-1 and 6-3) although Nicolás Jarry defeated Alexander Bublik 6-2 and 6-2 to level the duel that was resolved this Sunday with the victories of Tomás Barrios and Alejandro Tabilo against Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov (6-4 and 7-5) in doubles and Garín against Alexander Bublik 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3.
Finland conceded for the first time a final at the expense of Argentina, who were left after losing the tie played in Espoo (3-1). Emil Ruusuvuori is the architect. He won his singles and doubles. He defeated Pedro Cachín and the decisive match against Andres Molteni. And the doubles he finished with Harri Heliovaara. The only point in South America came from Francisco Cerúndolo against Otto Virtanen.
Croatia achieved its goal after defeating Austria in Rijeka (3-1). Borna Coric won their matches (against Dennis Novak and Dominik Them) and Borna Gojo got the other point. Austria can only prevail in doubles.
South Korea has achieved for the second consecutive edition its presence among the best in the Davis Cup. They defeated Belgium in Seoul (3-2) in an impressive comeback on matchday two.
Zizou Bergs and David Goffin left the series at 0-2, but victories on Sunday for Seong Chan Hong, Soonwoo Kwon and the doubles formed by Jisung Nam and Minkyu Song turned things around and took the Asian team in the last stage.
The Netherlands beat Slovakia in Groningen (4-0). Successes for Tallon Griekspoor, Tim Van Rijthoven and the duo formed by Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop.
In Maia, the Czech Republic managed to defeat Portugal (1-3) and secure their passport to the final stage. Jiri Kehecka is the key. He took the last point against Joao Sousa and first fulfilled his promise against Nuno Borges 6-4 6-4.
Tomas Machac also defeated Joao Sousa, 7-6 (6), 3-6 and 6-2, and the Portuguese team survived due to the points achieved by their doubles formed by Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral against Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek of 7 -5 and 7-6(4). But Kehecka’s win over Sousa sealed the tie.
On Saturday, Switzerland defeated Germany in Trier (2-3), France defeated Hungary in Tatabanya (2-3), the United States defeated Uzbekistan in Tashkent (0-4), Great Britain defeated Colombia in Cota (1-3), Serbia beat Norway in Oslo (0-4) and Sweden beat Bosnia in Stockholm (3-1). EFE
