China Lin Zhu defeated Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 6-4, 6-4 in the final of the Hua Hin tennis tournamentin Thailand, thus beginning his list of individual titles.
Making her debut in a WTA final, the 29-year-old player, ranked number 54, battled Tsurenko on a break of serve and decided the shock of others, a section where he was safer.
The finalists surrendered serve a total of 14 times, seven in each set.
In her first final since 2019, Tsurenko, 136 in the WTA ranking, 33, was able to save just one of the nine ‘break’ points available to her opponent.
Zhu confirmed his good start to the season with this result: Reached the quarterfinals in Auckland and the round of 16 at the Australian Open, after defeating top-10 player, Maria Sakkari, for the first time in her career.
The only precedent between the two, in 2019, was for Tsurenko.
