Xavi Simons, who emerged from the Barça youth academy, led PSV Eindhoven’s 6-0 win over Groningen before visiting Sevilla on Thursday in the first leg of the Europa League playoffs. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side temporarily sit within two points of Eredivisie leaders AZ Alkmaar before Feyenoord, now second, visit Heerenveen on Sunday with a view to regaining top spot.
PSV won again after a 2-2 draw against Feyenoord the previous day and they did it against a rival, Groningen, in the low hours, penultimate in the table, in relegation position.
Simons set up PSV’s first goal on the half-hour mark. He assisted former Sevilla and Barcelona player Luuk De Jong, who beat Michael Verrips for the first time.
Simons scored PSV’s second early in the second half after receiving a through ball from Joey Veereman, who also assisted the third, which Jarrad Branthwaite scored. And the fourth from the Belgian Johan Bakayok, the fifth from the Portuguese Fabio Silva and the sixth from Veereman.
