The 16-year-old Dutch rookie Zonta van der Goorbergh (Kalex) was the leader of the first free training session of the Moto2 Portuguese Grand Prix, whose results should have been unrelated to the end of the day, as no more than ten riders passed through the track due to asphalt conditions.
Van der Goorbergh set a best time of 2m04.519s, which was almost a second and a half faster than his closest rival, Italian Andrea Zaccone (Kalex).
The rain, which began to pour down harder as the first Moto2 exercises began, caused a delay in the start of the track for all riders, who thought and thought again before starting to shoot, as the American Joe Roberts (Kalex), the first to make it and one of its last protagonists, too, goes to earth at the end of it.
Behind him recruited the other riders, exactly two riders, the Thai Keminth Kubo (Kalex), who soon crashed on turn three, and the Dutch Zonta Van der Goorbergh (Kalex).
Minutes later, the “dare” to come off the track was the world leader, the Italian Celestino Vietti (Kalex), the Spanish Manuel “Manugas” González (Kalex) or the former compatriot, Niccolo Antonelli (Kalex), and small. Gradually, there was more, but at any given time all the riders in the category were on track, which made the session almost irrelevant because no rider took the risk.
