He Town of Manacor, tennis player’s hometown Rafael Nadalproposed the creation of a sculpture to honor his neighbor, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles and considered the best Spanish athlete of all time.
The sculpture is located in front of Nadal’s house in Manacor and represents the Majorcan tennis player sitting, as if resting after one set and another, with a racket at his feet and surrounded by a series of water bottles, according to in Ultima newspapers. Hora and Diario de Mallorca this Friday in their digital editions.
Next to him is a “second” Rafa, about 7 or 8 years old, watching him with another racket, this time slung over his back.
The sketch of the sculpture, originally made of bronze, proposes to place Nadal looking at his house and sitting against the wall of the large olive tree that dominates the Plaza del Palau in the Mallorcan town.
The City Council of Manacor hopes to meet with the tennis player to present him with the proposal to raise the sculpture, an initiative he must accept, and approved at a government meeting in June 2022.
Nadal was named Manacor’s Favorite Son in 2010, which is the highest recognition the city council can give to a living person.
Among the various proposals to honor the Manacorí champion on the island presented after winning his 22nd “big” in Australia 2022, they feature the raising of a statue in Palma, the renaming of the Son Sant Joan airport to “Rafael Nadal International Airport”, or put a euro coin on its face.
