Fernando Martínez-Vara del Rey de Irezábal, member of Los 50, a group that aims to recover and affirm the true history of Club Atlético de Madrid, published an article on the occasion of Athletic’s visit to the Metropolitan, where the mattress club decided to give up the use of the shirt rojiblanca in Basques for its 125th anniversary. Below we reproduce the full text.
“With the loyalty of a son and the wink of a comrade, Atlético de Madrid pays tribute to Athletic Bilbao on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the San Mamés club. In a kind initiative of the local board, the visitors are even those who wear rojiblanca , scratched and shared memory of more than a century of football.
The shirt is the channel of tears, the support of the shield. The real skin, the gentle shell, the light that never dies. Donation of colors is assumed to be honorable recognition and eternal gratitude. It is the exchange of you and me, the unerring goal of mutual generosity.
‘Los 50’, in its opposite function of preservation -we collect not to store, but to spread-, regularly return to the original story of the founding of Atlético de Madrid. The students of Biscayne in Madrid, the night of farming and the wonder of a distant April, the desire to have a team that will wear a custom suit of those from Bilbao in the capital: un exercise not of replica but of translation of the identity and the most important value of our ancestor, we said together A strange suit because it doesn’t pull at the armhole and because its stitching is snow-covered, bloody and -except for oblique and ephemeral exceptions- firmly vertical.
Laws, colors, names, are the immediate gifts that students of sleepless deprivation have given and at the same time given themselves. Honoring our bond is honoring them, and nothing is kinder to the mystery of sport than the use of ironic symbols.. Like when Athletic celebrated the first corridor in history in praise of Atlético winning the Liga in 69-70, like when Atlético gave its colors to Athletic during the 5th anniversary of Atlético Aviación.
On Sunday they will jump on the lawn of the Metropolitano and in the stands they will be joined by Irureta, Goicoecheaand more than 8 Basque surnames (note, Salinas no, but it adds) that plunged their seal into the waters of Nervión and Manzanares.
Aúpa Athletic, past perfect of our Atlético de Madrid. And have more years.”
