Julian Nagelsmann, coach of Bayern, was fined this Wednesday with 50,000 euros, but avoided suspension for his outburst against the referees after Saturday’s 3-2 loss against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Nagelsmann attacked referee Tobias Welz, and his assistants in his dressing room after the game against M’gladbach. The German Soccer Federation disallowed Nagelsmann after pointing out that the Bayern coach had apologized the same evening and it was the first time he had to appear before the federation’s committee for this type of action.
Nagelsmann was furious after his defender Dayot Upamecano was sent off in the 8th minute for a foul on Alassane Plea as the M’gladbach striker headed for goal. The contact was minimal, but Welz said it was enough to knock Plea off balance.
Nagelsmann saw things differently at the time. and then he angrily confronted the referees of the match. “Are they cheating on me or what?” said the technician. According to the minutes, Nagelsmann roared before knocking on the referees’ locker room door.
Bayern lead the Bundesliga on goal difference compared to Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin (who they face on Sunday), but Nagelsmann is under pressure after seeing his team’s 4-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga disappear when the winter break arrived.
