The ‘new San Siro’ project has faltered

Date:

The project known as ‘La Cattedrale’, the new Giuseppe Meazza (also the San Siro) for Inter and Milan, is languishing after the two clubs informed the Milan City Council on Tuesday that they were separately examining other alternatives to have their own stadium.

The Milanese stadium, owned by the City Council and born as San Siro as in the said neighborhood, which took its name from a chapel dedicated to the said saint located in the area, was officially named after Giuseppe Meazza from in March 1980, in honor. to one of the Milanese legends of Italian football, who played for Inter and Milan, as well as coaching the first of them.

The ‘tifosi’ milanistas, however, who consider Meazza as ‘more interista’, continue to name the stadium as San Siro.

Mayor’s meeting with clubs

That same morning, the three parties involved (Inter, Milan and the City Council) met to clarify the current situation and the intentions of each of them. The mayor of the municipality, the Italian Giuseppe Sala, was emphatic at the end of the meeting.

“One clear thing comes out of this meeting: nobody wants the old San Siro anymore. I’m not happy as a mayor, a citizen and a fan, but it’s something we fully understood,” he said.

Milan wanted the stadium elsewhere

Rossonero president Paolo Scaroni has put on the table the option for Milan to build its stadium in the La Maura area, while Inter also aim to build its own field, although it has not disclosed the area “for reasons of confidentiality” .

A shared stadium, Inter’s first choice

This was revealed by the interista’s representative, Alessandro Antonello, who also emphasized that the first option for the ‘Nerazzurri’ would continue to be a joint project with ‘La Cattedrale’.

“The main option continues to be the new San Siro stadium to be built with Milan but, today, President Scaroni has officially announced that there is interest in the La Maura area. We have to evaluate it for a few weeks and then meet again. again to see if they really develop this alternative or if we continue together at the San Siro,” Antonello said.

“The places within the municipality are very limited (to build the Inter stadium), so all the alternatives that are on the table now are outside…”, said Antonello.

Ultimatum to Milan

The mayor of Milan, like Inter, kept the ‘La Cattedrale’ project alive, although he “asked Milan to give a definite answer about his intentions in two or three weeks.”

“As mayor I see how difficult it is to build a stadium, because of the rules and the wishes of many. The real point is that in modern football you need a modern stadium. My first hope was the restoration of the San Siro, but the teams they made me understand that this is not a possible situation,” explained Sala.

In addition, the president commented on the complex situation for the City Council if both clubs decide not to pursue the project of the demolition of the San Siro and the construction of a new one.

“If the clubs choose a new place, it will be a problem for the municipality and it will not be easy, but let’s go step by step. It is clear that at that point the property cannot fall within structural interests of the municipality. , the only possibility is to open it to operators who want to use it for concerts or events,” said Sala.

The ‘La Cattedrale’ project

With the ‘La Cattedrale’ project, which has been slowed down due to tedious bureaucratic aspects slowing down all procedures and started three years ago, Inter and Milan will prepare their new fortress for the 2027-28 season, with a capacity of close to seventy thousand spectators; but the Meazza will not be demolished until the end of 2026, as it will host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympic Games.
