PSV Eindhoven, reigning tournament champions, and Ajax completed their quarterfinal qualifiers for the Netherlands Cup and joined Feyenoord and Spakenburg, from the Third Division, who made it to the semifinals last week, with the draw taking place this Friday.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV, fourth in the Eredivisie and eliminated on Thursday from the Europa League by Sevilla, imposed logic in their stadium (3-1) against The Hague, in the Second Division.
Johan Bakayoko opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Guus Til extended the lead in the 21′ and in the second half Ibrahim Sangaré made it 3-0 (54′) only for Malik Sellouki to recover shortly after of (56′).
Ajax, no problem
John Heitinga’s Ajax also defeated a rival in the Second Division, De Graafschap, although in this case at home (0-3). Mexican Jorge Sánchez quickly put qualification on the track (12′) and Steven Bergwijn made it 0-2 before half time to play (26′). Already in the final stages, Brian Brobbey established the final result.
Ajax, who are second three points behind leaders Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, continue to seek the double after being eliminated first in the Champions League and on Thursday in the Europa League against Union Berlin.
Spakenburg, surprise guest
The quarterfinals of the Netherlands Cup kicked off on Tuesday with a big surprise starring Spakenburg, a Third Division team who knocked out Utrecht at home with an incredible 1-4.
On Wednesday Feyenoord, leader of the Eredivisie, beat Herenveen, tenth, with a single goal from Mexican Santiago Giménez just ten minutes from time (0-1).
