Inter achieved a quiet victory over Samuel Umtiti’s Lecce (2-0) and regained the second place in Serie A that Lazio took from them on Friday after surprising Napoli (0-1). Simone Inzaghi’s team took full advantage of this failure of the leader to reduce their huge deficit to 15 points.
Hurt by the previous day’s defeat against Bologna (1-0), Inter was excited and clearly superior to a Lecce without an answer. Such was the overwhelming dominance of the ‘nerazzurri that in the first half they managed to exceed 80 percent of the possession of the ball.
Edin Dzeko, who started this time in place of Romelu Lukaku, had Inter’s first clear chance with a header from a corner kick that narrowly missed the target (19′).
It was some time before the goal came as Inter, with Denzel Dumfries and Robin Gosens very active on the wings, played at a good level.
Big help from Barella and Mkhitaryan, in the squad
Before half time, Gosens’ quick attack from the left led to a cross from the German to Nicoló Barella, who instead of defining, cut a defender calmly and with great quality and gave in brief so that Henrikh Mkhitaryan nailed his shot for the whole squad (28′). A goal.
Lecce, 15th in the table but nine points from the relegation zone, weathered the storm as best they could thanks to a confident Umtiti in defense and tried to turn the tide after the break, but 2-0 was arrived early and interrupted their plans.
Lautaro scored his 14th goal
Its author, of course, Lautaro Martínez with the final shot, first of all, hit the post, after a horizontal pass from Dumfries (52′). It was the 14th goal for ‘Toro’, second highest scorer in Serie A after Victor Osimhen.
The game ended there as a serious, focused Inter did not make any concessions to a limited Lecce and finished comfortably adding three points.
