The defender Toby Alderweireldwho were part of the so-called ‘Golden Generation’ of players from Belgium who finished third at the 2018 World Cup, is retiring from international football, the Belgian federation announced on Monday. Alderweireld, 34, who plays for Antwerp in the Belgian league after spells at Ajax, Atlético Madrid and Tottenham, made his national team debut in 2009.
He also played in the 2014 and 2022 World Cups and was unable to prevent the Red Devils from being eliminated at the group stage last year. “When I was young I dreamed of playing for the national team. I am very grateful and proud that this dream came true,” he said in a statement released by the federation.
“I can look back, 14 years later, and see 127 caps, three World Cup appearances, two European Championships and countless great memories,” he added. Alderweireld said he will now spend more time with his family and focus on his career in Antwerp. “It was a very difficult decision, but the right one at this time.”
