Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) won the first stage of the 58th edition of Tirreno-Adriatico Crédit Agricole, an 11.5 km individual time trial between Lido di Camaiore and Lido di Camaiore. Lennard Kämna (Bora – Hansgrohe) and Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) posted the second and third fastest times.
Ganna also leads the General Classification and wears the first Maglia Azzurra.
Two-time world champion, Ganna already won last year the first stage of the race between the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic. Ganna clocked 12’28”, nearly half a minute (28 seconds) ahead of German Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgroe), and 31 seconds ahead of his Ineos teammate, American Magnus Sheffield.
This flat, short and straight test, held in the first place under heavy rain, did not present any particular difficulties and did not compromise the chances of the main contenders for the final victory.
Seconds after the finish line, stage winner Filippo Ganna declared: “I am very happy with this incredible performance today. After winning the Strade Bianche with Tom Pidcock, we are ready for a great Tirreno-Adriatico. I have managed several second and third places since the beginning of the season, so it is very important for my morale to win today, also before the next Classics.”
