The Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) will compete again with Europe at the end of March after a knee injury forced him to withdraw from the final Vuelta a San Juan in January, and the winner of Tour 2019 reappear in back to catalonia wave Sunday of Coppi e Bartali.
Bernal, also won the Tour of Italy 2021still in the process of recovering from his serious accident in January 2022, his place with Ineos for the Tour de France which starts on July 1 in Bilbao is not guaranteed.
The British formation initially had Geraint Thomas leading the Giro d’Italia, while Colombian Daniel Felipe Martínez and Spanish champion Carlos Rodríguez were selected for the Tour.
“Egan will be back in Europe soon and hopefully he will be able to race at the end of the month,” said Ineos Grendadiers team principal, Rod Ellingworth on Cyclingnews.
As reflected by the coach, “Bernal is a little frustrated, but we are supporting him”, and details that the runner has had a knee problem that has nothing to do with last year’s accident. “Egan is eager to race but often with these guys, you have to slow it down.”
Ellingworth clarified that the team “has 30 riders and any of them can ride in the Tour. You have to put the best eight on the line.”
“If Egan is fit enough, why not bring him to the Tour for his experience and the help he can give to the team? The door is open and there are still four months before the Tour”, he concluded.
The man in charge of Ineos clarified that the plans for the Tour could go through Colombian Dani Martínez and Carlos Rodríguez.
“Dani Martínez and maybe Carlos Rodríguez will have their chance in the Tour. I think it’s a perfect Tour for Dani this year. He keeps growing and improving. I’m pretty excited about Dani and what can be done him on the Tour”.
