“They’ve gone crazy”, “I’m sorry but it seems ridiculous to me”, “the progression in aerodynamics has gotten out of hand”, the only thing missing is Carlos Sainz uttering his famous “stop inventing”. Those are some of the comments in the first acquisitions of wing pieces after F1 mounted on the tail that Yamaha put on the M1 of Fabio Quartararo and that David Emmett, from the specialist website Motomatters, got on the door of the box, two hours before the end of the day in Portimao. This was after the Frenchman achieved the second best time of the day, 0″148 behind leader Pecco Bagnaia.

At Yamaha they are playing with fire with their novelties because they also have to homologate the fairing which is within the limits of the current regulations. Yamaha spent most of their winter trying to give Quartararo the 5-6km/h top speed he needed to match rivals Ducati and Aprilia, but they lost agility in other areas. They changed the M1 into a very physical motorcycle to Quartararo’s despair and they had to play with the aerodynamics.
“We won’t be ready for the first race, that’s for sure. I’m not comfortable on the bike,” the 2021 champion settled at the end of the first day.
