Jürgen Klopp, the coach of Liverpool, has no doubts about recognizing the superiority of Real Madrid after being eliminated in the Champions League round of 16.
“Madrid have been the better team. In three of the four parts of the tie they are better. Even if we had a tie at Anfield and played like tonight, we probably wouldn’t have either,” said the German coach.
“To go through we needed a special performance and we couldn’t do it. The right team went through, we have to admit. Madrid controlled the game, it’s not what we wanted but it’s what we have,” added Klopp.
“We prepared for a special performance but we couldn’t get it on the pitch. Nobody wonders why Liverpool didn’t go ahead, that’s the way it is and we have to accept it,” said the red coach.
“Because of the experience and confidence that Real Madrid have, they are one of the favourites. They can win again with total security. What is certain is that whoever wants to be the champion will have to beat them. I see Manchester City and Napoli very strong,” he added.
The Liverpool coach thanked Real Madrid for playing ‘You’ll never walk alone’ over the public address system at the end of the game. “It’s a very nice gesture. There are two heavyweights who meet often in this competition and it’s clear that they have a lot of respect for each other.”
“At the end of the game I was not angry, just disappointed. I would have been angry if we had been eliminated by a penalty but in the end Real Madrid played better and I have been doing this for a long time to respect it,” he said.
From this moment, Liverpool focused on trying to achieve a return to the Premier League in order to play in the next edition of the Champions League if they finish in the top four of their League.
“In the history that we have in this competition, we usually start with the idea of winning it, to be honest. We’ve been to the finals several times in the last few years but we haven’t won. That’s why I say that if you want to win, you have to be outstanding and we were not. We want to be part of this competition every year and now we are committed to a very decisive week in the Premier”, he sentence.
