Premier uniform shirt designs and open debate

Date:

The Premier aims to increase its visibility. Longer numbers and finer shapes in their letters to be more readable from a distance. Complete uniformity. All the same. Rodrigo Sanchez, an international reference in graphic design, entered the debate. And he thinks to EFE. “It’s a good idea to implement common graphic standards for clubs with budgets that are not enough for lanterns, but not for large ones.”

Rodrigo Sánchez, graphic designer and journalist, an international benchmark in the sector, explained that the Premier’s decision to maintain unity and renew the designs for the next season responds to an attempt to improve the fan experience and that they have no problems recognizing footballers, either on the field or on television, although this puts a brake on creativity.

“The English league tries to improve the visibility, recognition and identity of the players for the spectators, whether they are present in the stadium or watching the television broadcast. Optimized graphic design in the service of the show. Longer numbers and shapes. refined to be recognized from afar. No more events, pranks or whims of the president’s brother-in-law. Just the same”, explained Sánchez.

Larger typeface with pattern

Avery Dennisona clothing company, has been in charge of the typography designs for the Premier League shirts since 2019 and this week announced that there will be a minor redesign for next season.

“The height of the number will be increased and the inclusion of a pattern for all teams ensures that the new font increases visibility. In addition to the name and number changes, the Premier League badge has been redesigned for the next that season and will only display the iconic lion,” the English league said.

The champion, with a badge

As a detail for the champion, the team that won the Premier this year, that is; Arsenal or Manchester City, will be able to wear the gold champion badge during the 2023-2024 season.

“English is chosen for beauty and coherence, not for individual difference. It comes in not failing other creative attempts.

“But, why not abound in the rules regarding the colors of the shirts, for example? The red is irritating, the yellow is dizzying on the contrary, the horizontal stripes are confusing, the second kit goes with the public. .. Or we’re going to homogenize the shields. Round, square or triangular and without crowns, crosses, animals, arrows, spears or coins that might anger someone.”

Fourth redesign in Premier history

This will be the fourth time in history (since 1992) that the Premier League has redesigned its squads. The new numbers and names have already been tested on the pitch, with commentators, to test their visibility, and they will start to be distributed in stores between spring and summer, depending on when each club starts selling their 2023-2024 season shirt. .

In the case of Spain, unification did not come until 2017, when the League decided to end the disparate designs and promote legibility. The regulation, so far, has not reached European competitions, where different teams and nationalities give more space to others.
