“It’s about popular recognition of a unique and unrepeatable generation.” La Peña Athletic El Txistu, led by its president Iñigo Crespo, presented yesterday in Bilbao the act of tribute to the last two-time Athletic champion to be held on April 20 at the Euskalduna Palace under the generic title ‘Txapelduna 40 urtes’. Dani, captain of that team, De Andrés, Patxi Salinas, Elgezabal and Bolaños monopolized the representation of that historic Clemente squad.
The aforementioned rojiblanca supporters club, with headquarters in Burgos, decided at the end of last year to launch the initiative aimed at recognizing the works of that Athletic champion Clemente. “We understand that not enough emphasis is placed on what it represents because that team is more than winning two consecutive Leagues, a Cup and a Super Cup,” Crespo explained to those in attendance.
Both Dani and Patxi Salinas thanked for this popular recognition in which, at least for now, Athletic has not been involved as a club. The promoters of the initiative, who hoped to gather around 600 people in Euskalduna, preferred to reserve the details about this act of tribute so that the former lions would be surprised. The commemorative poster of both was executed by Tomás Ondarra, cartoonist and former manager of Athletic.
