Palau, who has been wearing the iridescent jersey since last November, explained that “to reopen the World Cup season at home is incredible. I know many eyes are on me because I will start as favourite, I will try give my best in front of my fans. Being with me and wearing the World Champion jersey gives me a lot of motivation but at the same time it puts more pressure on me!”
And he added: “All the rivals are preparing hard and this test will be the first to measure how we are in shape. conditions for Glasgow World Championship which will be the second week of August.”
A circuit of the highest level
Vic is one of the privileged cities to have permanent facilities to host World Cup events. The Mas de Bigues circuit has been a facility with a fixed space for test training for more than ten years. During the year, the Trialsport club organizes courses for the youngest. In 2021 it was expanded and adapted to five areas on the occasion of UCI World Championships making it one of the largest and highest level facilities in existence.
New this year for the UCI World Cup event is that the direction the riders face in the zones will be reversed, as well as varying some of the obstacles.
● Zone 1: Rounded stones are kind of “boulders” with little contact on uneven ground with amazing climbing obstacles.
● Zone 2: Concrete elements with very long jumps and very narrow passages.
● Zone 3: Stone squares and blades combined with wooden sleepers on uneven ground. Very narrow walking surfaces with equilibrium conditions.
● Zone 4: Concrete elements combined with thin wooden posts; the most demanding for equilibrium situations.
● Zone 5: Square and jagged rocks with good grip on uneven terrain with fantastic climbing over obstacles.
It is a physically demanding circuit with a high technical level designed by Dani Parramon, sports coordinator at the International Cycling Union and head of the Trialsport Club Esportiu Osona. Parramon explained that “the common denominator is the length of the sections, which makes them difficult, especially 1, 3 and 5, which have the most slopes and can waste time due to the athletes’ recovery between obstacles and obstacles. The spectacularity of all the places makes it very visual and impressive for the spectators. Regarding the stages of the competition, the quarterfinals always offer a more affordable level, because tomorrow these among the young riders trying to meet, in the semifinals the level will be more demanding entering the top 10 of the UCI ranking with the 15 best in the quarterfinals. In the final, the level usually rises, with the six best classified. In these tests we are always looking for a balance between the sports aspect and the show”.
