Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime are two of the top seeds who advanced to the 3rd round of the Masters 1,000 on the hard courts in Miami (USA). The Greek will find his place in the round of 16 against Cristian Garín and the Canadian will do so against Francisco Cerúndolo.
Garín added this Saturday the first victory of his career against Argentine Sebastián Báez. Garín, world number 82 and last week’s eighth finalist at Indian Wells, avenged losses suffered against Báez at Córdoba (Argentina) 2022 and in Santiago de Chile this year, by winning 7-6(2 ) and 6-3.
The Chilean, who entered the draw from the qualifications, broke back from a deficit in the first set and overturned three set points at 4-5, before forcing a tiebreaker which he dominated 7-2.
Báez, number 33 in the world, broke in the opening game of the second set, but Garín, despite losing solidity on his serve, dominated the rest and made three breaks to open the way to the final 6 -3.
Garín will face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16, who advanced without playing due to Frenchman Richard Gasquet’s withdrawal.
Tsitsipas is the second seed in Miami, although he came close to an exit in Indian Wells, when he lost on his debut against Australian Jordan Thompson.
The Miami tournament will be held until April 2 with Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz as the defending champion and world number one and without Rafa Nadal or Serbian Novak Djokovic, who is absent because of his refusal to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
