“We don’t want ‘hooligan’ parents”

Date:

Remiro leads a pioneering and interesting project that aims to offer tools for emotional well-being to young football players.

What steps have you taken so far?

This first part we focus more on parents, positive parenting, and managing emotions in success and failure. It is for children and parents. We have started the first formation with Añorga and we will knock on the door of 50 clubs. We hope that all parents who want to participate will come. Because I often go to formations.

What are they after?

I never get tired of saying that this is something that is necessary and mandatory. It should be our health system that brings this, not a person like me. It cannot be that the child has to go to a psychologist and the parents pay 70 euros.

Why is the mental health of young people so undertreated?

I don’t know, but this is as important a topic as nutrition. What good is it to you to be prepared for something if then fears can take over? Or you don’t know how to manage disappointment or not playing or an injury. Everything influences.

Who are they teaching the message to?

We want to address everyone involved in a match day. Players, coaches, parents, siblings and referees. Soccer is a vehicle.

Have you had any close experience of children who have had these problems?

Yes. I live with them and every day I learn things and they tell me about situations. These are issues of insecurities, fears, frustrations… It’s about managing emotions. We don’t want ‘hooligan’ parents
