Jon Rahm didn’t just make history this Sunday by winning the Augusta Masters. The man from Barrika also got number 1 in the world golf ranking, held by American Scottie Scheffler.
Rahm slipped the green jacket into the hands of Scheffler, the 2022 winnerafter sorting out a complicated weekend that ended on the day Severiano Ballesteros, the first Spaniard to win at Augusta, turned 66.
The 87 Masters victory put him at the top of the world list with an average of 10.86 points, compared to Scheffler’s 10.56.tenth this Sunday, and the 8.78 by McIlroy, who didn’t make the cut after day two.
On March 13, Scheffler took the number one spot from the Spanish player after winning The Players, a tournament in which ‘León de Barrika’ had to withdraw due to gastroenteritis. Now he’s taking it back in style after hitting his second ‘big’.
Rahm also leads the FedExCup standingsthe American circuit table, after his fourth victory on the course, with 2,631 points, with Scheffler also second, with 1,844, and Max Homa third with 1,801.
The American Patrick Cantlay, who missed out on top spots in the last round, remains fourth (7.11) ahead of Australian Cameron Smith (5.81) and his compatriot Xander Schauffele (5.79), who moved up one place and pushed Max Homa (5.74) back to seventh place.
While the American Zalatoris (down at the last minute) and Norwegian Viktor Hovland, seventh this Sunday, remain eighth and ninthAmerican Sam Burns rose to tenth place in the order and Justin Thomas fell from eighth to twelfth, sharing the first two rounds with Rahm and failing to make the cut.
Sergio García was also absent the last two days and dropped from position 161 to 166while Adri Arnaus dropped to square 81, Adrián Otaegui to 88 and Pablo Larrazábal to 97.
