Jon Rahm assured this Sunday that it is “hard to believe” that he is the champion of the Augusta Masters and considered that Sergio García’s victory in 2017 made him believe that on the fields of Augusta National there is “something special for the Spanish”.
“It is the tenth largest in Spain and the sixth jacket. It’s hard for me to explain it because it was incredible to see Sergio win it and that really makes you believe that there is something special for the Spanish here. That we are destined to play well here. It’s an honor for me,” Rahm said at a press conference.
“Being the first European to win the Masters and the US Open is hard for me to believe, and it’s an honor“, he added.
Rahm from Biscay was declared champion of the Augusta Masters, the first ‘big’ of the season and one of the most important tournaments in world golf, finishing with a total of twelve under par and four strokes ahead of Brooks Koepka.
Rahm, 28, won the second major of his career, after the 2021 US Open and dethroned Scottie Scheffler, champion in 2022, at Augusta.
He is the fourth Spaniard to wear the green jacket at Augusta, after Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazábal and Sergio García. He is also the second Spaniard to win two different ‘major’ titles, after Ballesteros, double Masters champion and triple British Open champion.
“I don’t want to believe it until it’s fixed. I am reminded of Rafa Nadal’s book, when he talks about the 2008 Wimbledon final with Federer, when he hits a big blow and for the first time he lets himself think about victory. I think it was the fourth set and then they went to the fifth set. He explained that allowing himself to think about success caused him to lose the set. That’s why you have to stick to what’s important right now,” he said.
And he admits that he still has a hard time believing the consequences of his successamong them the right to play at Augusta for the rest of his life.
“Not even close to processing it. The only thing I know will happen is that chef José Andrés will create my menu every year. The rest I still do not let go of the thoughts. I thought that tomorrow he would be there, but at the moment I was barely aware of it. It’s an honor to be here all my life,” he said.
