The Argentine international Mauro Icardi in front of Galatasaraywill have to pay a fine equal to 7,500 euros for criticizing the referee after his team lost against Basaksehir in the Turkish Cup, the Turkish Football Federation reported on Tuesday.
“Mauro Emanuel Icardi is penalized with a fine of 150,000 liras for sharing statements directed against the referee on social networks,” the Disciplinary Council of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) said in a statement on Tuesday.
The match, played on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Turkish Cup, ended with a 3-2 loss to Galatasaray, after the referee and the VAR assistant disallowed two goals from the red and yellow teams, which were eliminated from the tournament.
Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk, said after the game that he did not dare to protest because “there is no democracy”, but Icardi, who scored one of the two valid goals, posted a message on Instagram in which he called the attitude “shameful” and “scandalous”, according to the Turkish press.
In the video, which was later deleted, the player described the referee’s decision as the “robbery of the year” and called for the resignation of the president of the central council of Turkish referees, lale ortakreports the station NTVSpor.
TFF also fined the Galatasaray, its president, Dursun Özbek, and the Basaksehir coach, Emre Belözoglu, for “violating sportsmanship” in post-game remarks.
