Many Chelsea players face a 30% cut in their salaries for not qualifying for next season’s Champions League, a setback that could have serious financial consequences for the London club due to the need to comply on fair financial play.
With the arrival in Chelsea of the American consortium led by Todd Boehly in May 2022, a clause has been introduced in the contracts of footballers -new signings and those who renew-, which will indicate wage cuts if qualification for the Champions League is not achieved, according to The Telegraph.
This will not affect, however, footballers who have already signed their contracts during Roman Abramovich’s tenure as the entity’s top president, as is the case with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic.
For these footballers, the clauses in their contracts include bonuses for winning titles, but not deductions for not qualifying for European competitions, as is the case with Chelsea this season, where it is almost impossible for them to reach the Europa League or Conference League.
A full payroll
total, since Boehly arrived, Chelsea have signed or renewed 19 players, with the Cesar Azpilicueta, Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Reece James.
To try to ease the financial pressure on a club that spent more than 600 million in two transfer windows, the ‘blues’ offered a long contract, with salaries amortized over different years, but they are forced to offload players next summer to balance the accounts and not face possible sanctions by UEFA or the Premier League.
Players who can leave
Among the options to lighten the accounts are N’Golo Kante, that the contract will end this year and has not yet closed the renewal, while Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ruben Loftus-Cheek fThey end their commitment to Chelsea in June 2024 and the club could try to cash out this summer before they leave on a free.
There is also a case of João Felix, that, if an agreement is not closed for the transfer of the Portuguese to Atlético de Madrid, he will return with the rojiblancos in July.
