The American Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis was confirmed this Saturday as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers today by defeating his compatriot Ryan Garcia by knockout in seven rounds.
At T-Mobile in Las Vegas, the fight, one of the most anticipated in 2023, began with the reign of García with his left ‘jab’, before a Davis unable to respond in the first three minutes of the fight.
In the second round, García again took the initiative, launching several attacks in the middle distance and seemed to put Gervonta in a bad situation, but with a minute left, when Ryan looked like he owned the fight, “Tank” reacted and with a left shot sent him crazy.
The third ’round’ of the fight agreed at 136 pounds was less action. Confident, Davis took the initiative against a conservative García, who in the fourth received several blows in the low plane from the hands of a dancing Gervonta, very quickly with his hands and legs.
Davis comfortable from behind, Garcia insisted on the jab, but didn’t use his longer reach much in the fifth, with Gervonta making good shots in the final minute and teasing a dance in a corner.
‘King Ry’ looked better in the sixth, punishing two offensives to a Davis, helpful in replying punches from middle distance.
Ryan García came out to shorten the difference against the judges’ cards; He hits his right swing, but in the second minute Gervonta hits a big hook to the liver. García took a few seconds to accept the receipt, then he put one knee on the canvas, the end.
He tried to get up, but he was finished, so Gervonta confirmed that he was going through a great moment of form sports and raised his hand as a candidate to be the king of the lightweight division.
Gervonta went 29 wins without a loss, 27 of them by knockoutand García suffered his first setback after 23 wins, 19 on the fast track.
“I knew what he was going to throw at me, we studied it; I took him down with one big punch, but I thought he was going to get up. I was very happy,” Davis said, while Garcia acknowledged that Saturday was more his rival is beautiful and deserves to win.
